چکیده

The vibration of the dimer excited by STM current on Si(001) surface is investigated. We describe this system by the Hamiltonian which has the electron-vibration coupling term as the key ingredient. In order to characterize the transition rates induced by STM current between vibrational states we have introduced the effective temperature of the vibration which differs from the temperature of the substrate. The behavior of the effective temperature depends on the substrate temperature and STM current in highly nonlinear manner and qualitatively changes around 50K of the substrate temperature. At lower temperatures, the effective temperature strongly deviates from the substrate temperature and reaches a few hundred Kelvin for the typical values of STM current. At higher substrate temperatures, the effective temperature reduces to the substrate temperature. On the basis of these behaviors of the effective temperature, we solve the puzzle of the symmetric-asymmetric crossover in dimer images of STM observation in the ordered state of c(4 × 2).

Structure of Self-Assembled Mn Atom Chains on Si(001).

Mn has been found to self-assemble into atomic chains running perpendicular to the surface dimer reconstruction on Si(001). They differ from other atomic chains by a striking asymmetric appearance in filled state scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images. This has prompted complicated structural models involving up to three Mn atoms per chain unit. Combining STM, atomic force microscopy, and d...

Unique dynamic appearance of a Ge-Si ad-dimer on Si(001).

We carry out a comparative study of the energetics and dynamics of Si-Si, Ge-Ge, and Ge-Si ad-dimers on top of a dimer row in the Si(001) surface, using first-principles calculations. The dynamic appearance of a Ge-Si dimer is distinctively different from that of a Si-Si or Ge-Ge dimer, providing a unique way for its identification by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Its "rocking" motion, o...

Atomic structure of Mn wires on Si(001) resolved by scanning tunneling microscopy.

At submonolayer coverage, Mn forms atomic wires on the Si(001) surface oriented perpendicular to the underlying Si dimer rows. While many other elements form symmetric dimer wires at room temperature, we show that Mn wires have an asymmetric appearance and pin the Si dimers nearby. We find that an atomic configuration with a Mn trimer unit cell can explain these observations as due to the inter...

First-Principles Study of Ethylene on Ge(001)sElectronic Structures and STM Images

By using the first-principles density functional theory, we calculate the partial charge densities and STM images for the intradimer di-σ and interdimer end-bridge adsorption configurations of ethylene on Ge(001). Our simulated STM images show the effects of ethylene adsorption and clarify that, although STM images and surface structures evolve as the adsorption sites of ethylene on Ge(001), th...

Origin of Symmetric Dimer Images of Si(001) Observed by Low-Temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

It has been a long-standing puzzle why buckled dimers of the Si(001) surface appeared symmetric below ~20 K in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments. Although such symmetric dimer images were concluded to be due to an artifact induced by STM measurements, its underlying mechanism is still veiled. Here, we demonstrate, based on a first-principles density-functional theory calculation, ...
